One fantastic aspect of this global community is that it is increasingly helpful and very convenient, especially when it comes to reuniting people with lost items around the world.

We’ve put together a list of a few different lost and found tales about people who have used the Internet to find things across the world. Never underestimate the power of the Internet!

– First up we have this hilarious tale from Toronto, Canada. Jordan Axani had booked a European vacation with his girlfriend Elizabeth Gallagher; however they broke up shortly before their departure date. Jordan then took the Internet by storm when he began an online campaign looking for another Elizabeth Gallagher to take his ex-girlfriends place on the non-transferable ticket. Sure enough, another Canadian Elizabeth Gallagher saw this online and took her place on the trip. They met for the first time in the departure lounge before setting off on a three-week whirlwind adventure. It was a huge success!

– Nothing is more annoying than losing a camera overseas with all of your happy snaps and memories from your travels. Luckily the Internet steps up when trying to locate people based on photos found on these cameras! We have Australian Hulia Boz who was reunited with her camera three months after she lost it on an iceberg in Antarctica, all thanks to a selfie and technology. We also have the story of the French base jumper who reunited a tourist with her lost iPhone in just 17 hours after creating a video to track her down – the video has been viewed over 270,000 times on YouTube.

– The Internet helped track down the owner of an engraved antique ring found nestled in some rocks at a beach in Bali. An Australian lady found the ring while snorkeling and took it home with her to QLD Australia, where she posted in a Facebook Group looking for the owner. The post was shared across the world before the owner’s granddaughter saw the post and claimed it. The owner happened to live just 3 hours away!

– Penny the dog was found 2,400 miles away from her home through a social media campaign. The Facebook page Bring Penny Home for Christmas took off and they were able to track down the puppy after a few people recognised the dog and claimed they saw a truck driver take her. She was home in time for New Year!

– As it turns out, even the Police are using the Internet to help track down the owners of lost items. The Dover Police Department recently launched a Pinterest page to help owners recover lost property through the pictures online. Apparently they’re not the only ones to use Pinterest as a lost and found tool – with many other police departments and colleges using it too.

Top App Categories

According to the 2014 Annual Report from App Annie, the top app category for iOS devices is Games. That means the majority of people are using their smartphones to download games. The top downloaded games worldwide were Candy Crush Saga, Subway Surfers, My Talking Tom, Farm Heroes Saga and Clash of Clans.

Following Games, the next highest categories were Entertainment and Photo & Video.

Coming in fourth was Social Networking – which is home to the top apps worldwide (excluding games). These top apps include the likes of Facebook Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Skype.

In fact, this is where our app Like It? Find It! fits in. Our app is classified as a social networking app because it aims to create a community of like-minded people who work together to find a solution and help others out.

The next highest ranked categories were lifestyle, utilities, music, productivity, education and travel – respectively.

App Usage And Engagement

Although the top categories indicate that games and entertainment are the most popular types of apps, the actual usage and engagement for app categories differs. According to the App Annie report for 2015, apps are primarily used as forms of communication and social media.

These two categories have an incredibly high level of engagement from smartphone users around the globe, as well as a large amount of time spent using them. Apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp and LINE are among the most used app for this year so far.
